African Americans, are you offended by the Confederate flag or the sight of a noose?
I’m just curious. Frankly, as a Jew, I see the confederate flag as the equivalent for blacks, as a nazi flag would be for Jews. Is a hanging noose just as offensive? I don’t see any place in society for the confederate banner, or nooses for that matter.
William F, So, should the nazi flag still be hung in Germany? Since it’s a part of thier history.
Gee, It seems I’m being called everything from an ignorant racist to a patriot, as usual here on YA. I’m going to let the people vote on this one. Thanks for the answers everyone

The Confederate flag is a part of our history and should be preserved.
Why not? If you dont learn from the past you are destined to repeat it.

I am. I cannot speak for others. The Holocaust is a part of German history yet no one there view it as something to be proud of.

I’m white and I find them offensive. They are used to instill fear and to intimidate so they are being used offensively.

I wouldn’t say I’m offended. I live in Texas and lots of people fly Confederate flags. I suppose that’s their constitutional right. But it doesn’t make them morally right.
Nooses yes thats offensive if its put out there as a hate crime. But if its halloween i think its alright.
im a pretty easy going person

Personally I don’t see the comparison.
Confederates didn’t murder millions of people.
There is nothing wrong with a noose if it is being used as capital punishment.

Hello Butters, There Was an African American Woman by the Name of Selma Burke that went To GERMANY during World War Two to help Smuggle Food to Jews who were in Hiding from Nazis. People always hear about Courageous Corrie Ten Boom and Her family. That’s How Much African Americans Hate Injustice!
It’s Black History Month and It’s time for You to look up Jim Crow Laws, the One Drop Rule, Emmitt Till and see how well the Confederate Flag would be even to you. Most African Americans don’t Know facts like those.
Did You also Know that the Five Civilized Nations Held African Slaves about 30 Years longer than America after the Emancipation Proclamation and even Smuggled More Africans into the Country? They are Sovereign and can do as they please…Some were even Legally married into those Same Tribes who are Now the Choctaws, Chickasaws of Mississippi, Florida Illinois and Georgia? That’s what Racism does and is glorified in a Flag! Have a Nice Day!

It’s true the confederate flag should be considered treason because it went against all the US Constitution stood for. It denied human rights and we as American’s should not respect it and should consider it treasonous paraphernalia.

The confererate flag is a sign of racism or flag that was flown in america during political unrest .History in america should not be racist as it should be explained through history as southern ways where very respectful in the way they talked to people and be more concerned about feeding your family not giving your money to crack cocaine dealers clean up your homes so even hispanic people can see there children walk down the street without racism .Hispanics or should i say south american’s are good people.Ask not a african american but america if he or she would a like hot apple pie.

I may as well get some hate mail. I can understand why some southerners see the confederate flag as a symbol of the south and don’t necessarily use it as a symbol of segregation. Their ancestors fought under the flag. I’m sure there are other people who do use it as a weapon against black people and why they should be concerned about it’s display. I can see both sides.
I don’t think there’s any justification to putting a noose on a car, but the beating that preceded the noose display was just as bad.

Although blacks were persecuted in the south, comparing the people with Nazis is ignorant. Did you know that a lot of slaves never left the plantations after they were freed? Did you also know that the noose was used on murderers, and horse thieves, even white ones? Do you see anything outside of your narrow minded views? Slavery and the Holocaust were terrible things, but how long are we going to live in the past?

We will always have a small part of our society who like to bait the rest of us and as long as they know that the battle flag makes some one else mad you are going to see them. Maybe if every one ignored them the novelty would wear off and the flags would disappear.

I completely understand getting upset about a noose. That is a death threat. Under the law anyone hanging a noose as a form of intimidation could be charged with making a "teroristic threat". Because they threatened violence and had the means to carry it out. Under Texas law this is a felony so any prosecutor who says he can’t do anything about it is not doing his job. On the issue of The Confederate flag I just don’t see the same comparison. It is a piece of history. Just because someone flies the Confederate flag does not make them racist. It is not a symbol of hate or intimidation. It is simply a matter of southern pride. Frankly the US flag should be just as offensive if slavery is the issue. Slavery existed for 89 years uner the US Constitution and just 5 years under the Confederate Constitution. Yes there are some pathetic racist groups that try to use the Confederate flag as their symbol, but that does not give them the right to rob all southerners of the right to honor their history. The South is very racially diverse and pretty racially tolerant. Why don’t you try talking to those people flying the flag to find out what it means to them? You might be surprised. People are not really as hateful as you think they are. Nether the flag nor the Noose are inherently racist, though the Noose is inherently threatening. However Both can be used by racist individuals to serve their purposes. Inanimate objects are not racist, Only people are racist. I support the rights of people to fly the flag. And I support the prosecution of anyone who uses a noose to commit a Terroristic Threat, regardless of the ethnicity of their intended victim.

If the flag osnt being used as an offensive gesture or something why would it be offensive? it’s a part of history, as for the noose, why would blacks find that offensive? its not like they were the only ones a noose has ever been used on

You I know I never really saw the Confederate flag as something to be offended by. But as a southern gal myself it might just be a my rearing
As for the noose; Personally I don’t see why the Blacks have any more right to be offended then any other race. Of course I am considerable racist for this day and age. Don’t get me wrong I don’t consider myself any better then people of a different race nor do I hate anyone simply because of who they are, but My views might be considered terribly insenstive
I have a question or you though, as long the same lines as the noose, as a Jew are you offended by ovens?

You cant compare the Confederate flag and a noose thats retarded. The flag means a lot to many, many people. A noose wasnt invented to hang black people its been around for a really long time. The flag is not racist a noose could be racist depending on how it is displayed.

I have african american friends and they have never been offended by me flying the flags of my ancestors. I am proud that they took a stand against the tyrant union, blacks were forced to serve under the union flag but that is never brought up and how about the blacks that served under the confederate flag? the noose is far to much, but thats what u get when people take things to far, now we are all considered racists. its heritage not hate

I agree with your comparison of the Confederate flag to Nazi flag. Nooses are associated with lynching, which was the post-Civil War response to how to keep black people in "their place" in spite of Emancipation. Thus, since they are associated with the gross mistreatment of blacks in a direct way they are offensive, too.
Believe it or not, President Bush made that connection at the White House just today in a speech honoring black history month.
You should also see the movie, "The Great Debaters" on this subject.
