CONS: Now that the US buys nothing but Chinese products could it be time to start reviving US manufacturing?
In the weeks following 9/11 34.8 million dollars in sales came from Chinese made American flags.
Wal-Mart is the largest retailer/grocery store/corporation in the history of planet earth and sells pretty much nothing that’s made in the states. Wal-mart is also trampling all over the world of mom-n-pop shops.
Republicans had just as much to do with NAFTA as Clinton did so please think twice before using that card.

Before Obozo was elected he said he would bring jobs back home.We can see how serious he was by the continuation of jobs being lost.Just because Bush was a globalist doesn’t mean that all conservatives are too or that we agreed with him.

The North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA is an agreement signed by the governments of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America. NAFTA has nothing to do with trade with China.
The World trade organization covers trade with China and those were originally negotiated by Bill Clinton. It is just another scam wihich lowers the standard of living of Americans in exchange for wealth distribution to third world nations and developing markets. Progressive policy at its finest, its called racing to the bottom by people who understand what they are looking at.
SEIU can’t wait to get their hands on the workers of China, almost a billion unskilled workers will be worth trillions in revenues. "workers of the world unite" Obama will never stop globalization, his union friends intend to become trillionaires exploiting emerging labor markets. (read Andy Stern’s book "A country that works"). Your labor unions are interested in world markets because they can’t get rich enough on American workers. They have sold you down the river to promote the redistribution agenda.

Business will seek out areas where labor is cheapest. Economics 101. Thank the govt. and labor unions for the death of manufacturing in the U.S. Taxes and entitlements drive up costs. We can’t even make Japanese cars without screwing them up.
I’m with you, but the govt. and general sense of entitlement in the U.S. drives manufacturing off shores. I don’t begrudge China in general, however, I find stories like this darkly humorous:
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Windows/Microsofts-Chinese-Factory-Inspection-Could-Prove-Ineffective-104690/
Isn’t Bill Gates supposed to be some kind of humanitarian? Funny how Microsoft is ignorant of its products’ origins ’til work conditions make the news.
Whaddaya propose we make? Chinese flags at an astonomically higher price than the Chinese could make a similar product?
Finally, yes, it sucks that customer service is dead (the only reason to go to mom and pop stores) but the ugly truth is people want crap cheap, not necessarily from someone who cares or knows what they’re talking about or selling. Walmart is meeting a need and employees a helluva a lot of people in the service industry… where most growth will be seen in consumer economy (as is the economy in the U.S.).
Ah, the good ol’ days….

You first have to look at the reasons why the US imports most manufactured goods.
In my opinion the reason is simple, the US drifted away from the economic model that made it great. The small business, the high street store, the local bank, these were the bedrock of the US economy as they were accountable and prospered or failed depending on their performance and popularity.
By moving away from that model corporations became unaccountable and obscure in their practices, to the extend that they could buy power and politicians, rather than rely on public support and their own reputation.
The wealth kept moving up the ladder in greater concentration to the extend that there is little left in the hands of the average citizen, who could no longer afford with meager earnings to buy the goods that he or she produced.
The importation of foreign goods from labor-cheap markets became a necessity in maintaining the status quo. On the one hand this helps to maintain a certain standard of living thus preventing unrest and on the other hand it enables the corporations who brought this about to carry on making profits that would not be possible if the goods were produced locally.
Capitalism relies on an ever expanding market for its survival, unfortunately the world is finite and unless there are real measures taken to contain the excesses of the system it is doomed to failure.
We are now witnessing the final throws of the dice of this giant MONOPOLY game. The game was almost over decades ago as most players run out of money, but the clever winners said "let us not stop, we shall lend you the money to have another go". The game is over it is not easily discernible as a giant monopoly but with the wealth of the world is owned by so few interconnected pools of capital it is almost as good as. So let us call it an OLIGOPOLY which fixes the prices and manipulates the currencies with the citizens as the losers.
It is time we went back to the local farm, high street store, carpenter shop, local bakery, the cobbler and the forge. That was what kept people in employment, with the wealth moving and by and large staying within the local community.
This will give the community, the city, and the state the independence that they lost a very long time ago. People will start feeling their own worth again in terms of purpose, usefulness and interdependence.
YES let us all start again and not just in the US but throughout the free world.

Why people bitching that all mfg. goes to China. Why not compliant to the buyers, instead shooting hot in the internet.
I don’t think all those big company and those presidents really care about the poor working people, as long as they keep raking the money in for them selves
