Technically speaking, it was the Los Angeles Dodgers that started to commercialize baseball. When the team was formed in the late 1800, amateur baseball leagues have gained popularity amongst the people who loved the game.

The Dodgers got its name from the Brooklyn nickname “trolley dodger”. This term refers to anybody from Brooklyn, New York, because they tend to dodge the trains and the cars on the borough as they try to play on the streets. Initially, the team was known as the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers.

The archrivals of the Dodgers are the Giants. And their rivalry can be traced way back centuries ago. The Dodgers and the Giants are both from New York. If the Dodgers are from Brooklyn, the Giants are from Manhattan. They practically have the whole state torn apart. When the teams were transported from New York to California, the rivalry was merely transplanted. In 1958, the Dodgers became the seeds from Los Angeles while the Giants represented San Francisco.

But before being the Los Angeles Dodgers as they are known today, the team was named the Brooklyn Robins in the early 1900’s. This is because of team manager Wilbert Robinson who had restored the team’s reputation in the league. He did so by motivating the team to reach the World Series in the years 1916 and 1920.

Wilbert Robinson was replaced by Max Carey when he retired in 1931. The team was almost named as the Brooklyn Canaries then, which was after Carey this time, whose last name was really Carnarius. However, that didn’t happen. Instead, their original name Brooklyn Dodgers was restored.

During the 1930’s, the Dodgers were even more determined to rebuild the team and become strong contenders to the title. Larry MacPhail, the Dodger’s general manager during that time, was joined by Branch Rickey in forming a team that is composed by Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, Roy Campanella, Carl Furillo, and Duke Snider. All together, they won five pennants from 1941 to 1953. However, they were beaten by another New York team, the Yankees, in all of those series. The resilient team and the eager fans never lost hope though. And with their eyes on their goal, their slogan became “Wait til next year!” The “next year” came in 1955, when the Dodgers beat the Bronx Bombers to obtain the much awaited championship title.

When Walter O’Malley gained majority ownership of the team in 1950, he started thinking of buying a land in Brooklyn to build a stadium that is way better and more accessible than the Ebbets Field where the Dodgers are playing. Being a real estate businessman, he tried to look for the most suitable place until he decided that the piece of land that he needs exactly is not in Brooklyn. That is when he started to consider Los Angeles, California.

As you enter the ball park to take your seat, one of the first things that you notice is the players’ uniforms. There is a very good chance you don’t know a single one of the people on the field personally-it’s the colors on their uniforms that immediately tell you whether he is friend or foe. As well as helping you bond to the team, much like a flag for your country, they keep you aware of the fact that you are just a spectator, and that they are the professional baseball warriors.

Just as seeing your favorite players in their uniforms excites you and makes you proud to be a fan, for a player there is a huge sense of pride and belonging to walking on to the field with a team full of other players proudly wearing the same jersey, looking at all the fans out there. There, in one of the stands, a player sees a fan with his jersey on. Just as these uniforms remind the fans that the people in uniform are the players, these uniforms tell the players, “I am a soldier of baseball, and this is my team.

Ever since history has been recorded, throughout all the various battles and wars our planet has seen, there has always been a great sense of pride revolving around the uniform, or armor, a great aura that that you just can’t put your finger on. This as well applies to the brilliantly colored and designed uniforms of baseball.

History’s first record of an official baseball uniform was that of the Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York City, and was introduced in 1849. The uniform consisted of a white flannel shirt, a straw hat, and blue wool pants. Today’s baseball uniforms are a far cry from this. Synthetic fabrics used in simple yet intricate patterns of colors. Well, are uniforms didn’t just change overnight, the styles changed, little by little, over time.

In 1868, knickers are introduced to the game of baseball by the Cincinnati Red Stockings. These were more comfortable to play in and allowed the players much more movement. These also showed a very important feature of the team’s uniform, their red stockings. Colors and patterns on uniforms were played with a lot between 1880 and 1890. 1882 saw the rise and fall of multi-colored uniforms to correspond to a player’s position, while the only discerning factor between the teams was their stocking color. In 1888, three major league teams, Washington and Detroit of the National League, and Brooklyn of the American Association, introduced stripes on their uniforms. The checkered uniform, though short lived, was introduced by the Brooklyn Bridegrooms in 1889. Brooklyn remained as the trend-setters for baseball uniforms, bringing back their checked uniform again in 1907, 1916, and 1917. They also had a trial with satin uniforms in the ’40s and became the first major league team to put numbers on the front of their jerseys in ’52.

The timeline of changes can go on and on, down to the tiniest details, but thanks to the trial and error of baseball warriors and their commanders before us, we have the uniform today that is recognized by the masses, yet retaining the mystique and pride surrounding uniforms of all types.

Organized Baseball

There are many baseball players in the United States who play on teams that represent large cities. These teams are organized into what are called leagues. There are two “big leagues,” or “major leagues,” in the United States. They are the American League and the National League. There are other leagues in the United States that are less important and are called minor leagues. The most important minor leagues are rated AAA (“triple A”); then come AA, A, B, C, and D. Each league is made up of some four to eight teams.

In each league the teams play each other over and over again until the season is completed. A season in the major leagues consists of 154 games, and in the minor leagues it varies from slightly less than this number to slightly more. The team that wins the most games in each league during a season wins the pennant for that season. The pennantwinning teams in the American and National Leagues play each other, each fall, in the World Series. Actually they are playing for the championship of organized baseball in the United States. Another important baseball event is the yearly All-Star Game. The best players in each of the two major leagues are elected by the votes of the fans, the people who watch and enjoy baseball.

The American League all-stars play the National League all-stars about the middle of July. All men who play in these baseball leagues are called professional baseball players, which means that they are paid salaries to play. Other men who play for money but do not play in regular leagues are called semiprofessional baseball players. Organized baseball consists of all the professional baseball leagues, and it is the highest form of baseball that is played. Organized baseball is governed by a national baseball commission. Each league is run by a president and several assistants. The league presidents appoint the umpires and see to it that the teams play baseball according to the regular schedule and that they all observe all of the rules.

Each professional baseball team has its own ballpark or stadium. The major-league stadiums are the largest in the country and hold thousands of people. The Yankee Stadium in New York City, the home of the New York Yankees, has seats for 67,000 people and the Cleveland stadium seats nearly 100,000. The other major-league stadiums can seat at least 30,000 people. Most minor-league stadiums have seats for 5,000 or 10,000 people, up to 30,000. Baseball is also played in colleges, schools, army camps, and by club teams. When a boy has shown baseball skill he usually moves up from either a club or college team to a minor-league team, and if he continues to show skill he eventually reaches the major leagues, which are the goal of every young American baseball player.

Boys and young men who play on fields and lots and pastures all over the country are playing what is called sandlot baseball. Most boys about 12 years old who play baseball play in what is called the Little League. In the Little League the baseball fields are smaller than regulation fields -the distance between the bases is 60 feet instead of 90 feet. The game itself is basically the same as regulation baseball. It is played with the same kind of balls and bats and gloves. The American Legion for many years has also encouraged baseball for boys. Philadelphia (79-60) has won consecutive NL pennants, and adding a third appeared unlikely as late as July 21 with the club third in the division, seven games behind first-place Atlanta.

The Phillies haven’t been alone atop the division since May 30, but winning 31 of 45 has them within one-half game of the Braves.

The offense has played a vital role in Philadelphia’s surge, averaging 5.6 runs during those victories compared to scoring 2.0 runs per game in the defeats.

Those trends were evident in a doubleheader split with the Marlins (70-67) in the start of this four-game series Monday. The Phillies were held to three hits in a 7-1 loss before collecting 10 in a 7-4 victory in the second game.

“It’s just been the inconsistency of our offense,” manager Charlie Manuel said.

Placido Polanco’s contributions have been significant over the last 45 games. The third baseman is batting .343 with 15 RBIs in the victories over that stretch, while posting a .157 average with two RBIs in the losses.

Polanco had a double and a triple while driving in two runs in Monday’s win after going 0 for 3 in the first game.

The Phillies will send Joe Blanton (6-6, 5.25) to the mound Tuesday night hoping he can rebound from one of his worst performances of the season.

The right-hander was pounded for six runs and 10 hits, including a season high-tying three homers, in 4 1/3 innings of a 12-11 win at Colorado on Thursday. He had been 3-0 with a 3.27 ERA over his seven previous starts, giving up two earned runs or fewer in five of them.

Blanton is 4-2 with a 3.44 ERA in six starts against the Marlins, but hasn’t faced them since allowing five runs in six innings of a 7-2 home loss Oct. 2.

Unlike the Phillies, the Marlins’ playoff hopes are dimming after splitting their last 10 games.

Chris Volstad (9-9, 4.82) gets the ball for the first time since being ejected for his part in a bench-clearing brawl that marred a 16-10 win over Washington on Wednesday.

The right-hander threw the first pitch of the sixth inning behind the Nationals’ Nyjer Morgan, who charged the mound before the melee escalated and resulted in four ejections. Volstad left after surrendering six runs and nine hits in five innings while also hitting three batters, including Morgan in the fourth.

Volstad, who is 5-1 with a 4.93 ERA in eight starts, is appealing his six-game suspension and ,000 fine.

He’s seen his last four starts against the Phillies result in losses for the Marlins, while he’s gone 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA.

Hanley Ramirez is on a 14-game hitting streak, during which he’s batting .471 with five homers, 14 RBIs and seven steals. It’s the All-Star shortstop’s longest run since a career-high 16-game streak Aug. 5-21, 2009.

Ramirez is 3 for 10 against Blanton, and has a career .329 average at Philadelphia.

“That’s the reason you want to come to a team like this. They know how to do it,” Halladay said. “It’s the coolest thing I’ve been a part of. It’s just the start, I think.”

Halladay (21-10) will be on the big stage of the playoffs for the first time in his 13th major league season, having played his entire career with the Toronto Blue Jays before being traded to Philadelphia last winter.

The normally stoic pitcher and 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner punched his glove with his pitching hand after striking out batter Danny Espinosa for the final out.

After the final out, Halladay instantly broke into a big smile, and the Phillies gathered in the middle of the diamond for hugs and high-fives. Thousands of red-clad, towel-waving Phillies fans in the crowd gave a standing ovation then began their last in a long series of chants of “Let’s go, Phillies!”

Looking to become the first team in 66 years to win three consecutive National League championships, the Phillies started this season strong, before injuries and an inconsistent offense took a toll. Six of Philadelphia’s eight regulars spent time on the disabled list, and nearly all saw their production decline. At one point, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino were absent during a nearly two-week stretch in August.

Unlike previous years, when they counted on a potent offense, the Phillies relied on outstanding pitching in 2010. Led by Halladay, Hamels and Oswalt, the starting rotation dominated, especially in September. Still, it was a much tougher road to the postseason than a year ago, when Philadelphia moved into first place for good on May 30, before eventually losing to the New York Yankees in the World Series.

The Phillies wrapped things up against the Nationals in 2007 and 2008, too; winning the World Series for the franchise’s second title. Now, the Phillies are making another run for a championship. They are -120 to win the National League Pennant and +150 to win the World Series.

5. Prime Ticket. With the Angels facing a tough road ahead in leapfrogging the Rangers, it looks like the Dodgers are going to be L.A.’s team this year. Coverage overview

In 1998, ESPN Radio took over from CBS Radio as the official, national radio broadcaster for Major League Baseball. The network’s current contract runs through the 2010 season. As of 2006, Major League Baseball on ESPN Radio is heard on over 321 stations across the United States. The theme music for MLB on ESPN Radio for the 2009 season is “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus.

The games include Opening Day, Sunday Night Baseball, Saturday Game of the Week, holiday games and September pennant race games. ESPN Radio holds exclusive rights to the All-Star Game. The postseason (including the Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series) is a semi-exclusive arrangement. The participating teams’ flagship stations are allowed to air play-by-play using their own announcers and production. The national ESPN Radio feed may, however, be carried live on another station in those markets as well. If teams’ affiliate stations wish to carry coverage of the game it must be the national feed. Since the inaugural World Baseball Classic in March 2006, the semi-finals and the championship have also been broadcast as part of Major League Baseball on ESPN Radio.

In addition to affiliate stations on AM/FM radio, ESPN Radio’s game broadcasts are carried as part of XM Satellite Radio’s MLB coverage. They are not included in the subscription “Gameday Audio” package on MLB.com with the exception of the All-Star Game, as no other radio play-by-play feed is available.

Due to rights restrictions, ESPN Radio.com or most other ESPN/Disney online ventures (such as DGamer) cannot stream the games.

History

On September 27, 1997, ESPN Radio outbid CBS Radio to become the exclusive national radio broadcaster of Major League Baseball. This was very surprising, considering that CBS Radio had been the national broadcaster since 1976.

The agreement lasted seven years through 2004 and gave ESPN Radio the rights to broadcast numerous games including opening Day, Sunday Night Baseball, Saturday Game of the Week, holiday games, September pennant race games, the All-Star Game and all of the playoffs, including the World Series.

Then on October 21, 2004, ESPN Radio extended its then seven year relationship with Major League Baseball with a five year, million dollar contract extension through the 2010 season.

The agreement also added a weekly program devoted to baseball, which became The Baseball Show from 3 p.m. ET to 7 p.m. ET on Sundays during the regular season. The program is hosted by John Seibel and Steve Phillips.

In 2008 and 2009, ESPN Radio’s lead Sunday Night Baseball crew consisted of Gary Thorne on play-by-play and Dave Campbell with game analysis. Thorne succeeded Dan Shulman, who had called play-by-play for the network since 2002; Shulman, in turn, had been preceded by Charley Steiner from 19982002. Campbell replaced Kevin Kennedy as analyst in 1999. The Baseball Tonight studio host for all of the games since its debut has been Joe D’Ambrosio.

The broadcast team for the World Series and one League Championship Series is Jon Miller with play-by-play and Hall of Famer Joe Morgan with game analysis and has been since its debut on ESPN Radio, except for 1999, when Morgan called the games for NBC. Miller and Morgan are the Sunday Night Baseball television crew during the regular season. During all of the games there is also the ESPN Radio SportsCenter every twenty minutes with live cut ins during the games. Shulman and Campbell typically call the other LCS, as well as the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. Various other announcers work the network’s secondary regular-season and Division Series broadcasts as needed.

Shulman, John Rooney, and Jim Durham occasionally fill in for Thorne on Sunday night broadcasts.

In the 2010 season, Jon Sciambi will succeed Thorne as the network’s lead Sunday Night Baseball voice.
