My opinion on Strategy browser game Caesary Online

I received an email from Caesary Online Game regarding a brand new browser game and right off the bat I had a few developing opinions. First thing that caught my eye was actually the brown background, a uninteresting color with no… passion to it. Just a few shades of brown and tan yet this was in some ways saved by the more interesting splash banner across the top, a battle-hardened Roman legion posed before a night sky that appeared to be on fire. And then of course I saw the name of the game itself.

And where I had my first really big issue with the game. “Caesary” is not a good name. First of all its not a real word at all, just Caesar with a Y added to prevent being sued by Sierra games. Secondly, adding a Y to Caesar doesn’t NOT remind you of the series of titles called “Caesar” released by Sierra games. Whether intentional or not, its a poor choice to cut the line that closely. Both games are based in ancient Rome where you control a city and slowly build the place up and defend it from attacks. In many ways, Caesary is even less complicated than the Caesar titles. Additionally, “Caesary” sounds like a joke name, similar to “cheesy” or some weird salad dressing. I can imagine someone going, “I feel Caesary today” and it sounds goofy as heck. Most people I told the name to thought it was stupid or laughable.

However, as I do like real time strategy games and have interests here at Aeria Games, I thought I would try it out and get past the goofy name. The page the game is hosted on is pretty nice at the top, with a large version of the email banner as a background, fitting in well with the new Aeria look across the top. As the game loads I scroll down the page and see… empty white space. You don’t need a shoutbox on a page with a game that has its own shoutbox. Its an unnecessary waste of space. Furthermore, if someone feels the need to have a “featured games” list on the page of another game, at least spread it across the bottom, and not all on one side. This leaves a ton of empty space in the middle that looks very poor. The top half of the page looks great, while the bottom is an empty spot that looks to have nothing to do with the top.

As the game loads, I find that even a RTS requires a buxom woman to promote. Then you’re lead through a short tutorial to get you started. All pretty good, if a bit on the heavy reading side. Then you get into the actual game and start to stamp out your dominion in the wide world of… all of Europe?? Did someone miss the memo that Romans didn’t own everything in Europe at the time? Anyway, now its time to get your city built up.

As one little city surrounded by tons of other similar looking cities, there’s not much to differentiate you from your neighbors. In fact if you aren’t careful about your name choices, you could end up being exactly the same as the guy next to you. Not very unique in terms of visual appearance on the map. Many leagues had even begun to assign random status (friendly/hostile) simply to add more color to each flag and tell who was who. Furthermore, all the near by “wilderness” areas seemed very similar to each other, and the forest areas in particular were like if someone had used the “clone” tool in photoshop a couple times. Some of the ‘river’ areas were hard to visually tell apart from areas that were just empty spots with rivers running through them. Additionally, my area had a large river nearby that would graphically mess up every time I exited the city view and would have to be fixed by moving the camera. Then the river would jump to its correct location and would be fine until the next time I changed views.

Speaking of moving the camera, the current system is very poor and reminds me of playing on a DSi or iPod type device, being required to continually drag the mouse to move the camera position. A preferred method would be to simply allow user to right-click or ctrl-click and hold while moving the mouse around to change the camera position by moving it around the edges of the screen. Additionally, allowing the player multiple viewing angles in either the global view or the city view would allow different experiences and see “around” the area.

As a constantly updated and changing RTS game, I expect to have to deal with timers falling at bad times and having a lot of down time. However as I got further into the game I realized that this would happen more and more for longer periods of time. Eventually I would get to the point where I would have nothing to do for an hour but wait for the next timer to count down so I could make the next choice and wait for another hour. By a level 8 rectorate, you will end up waiting for over a day while the building process sucks up a spot on your potential list of things to do. I can only imagine what it would be like for people with only 1 builder who would be force out of things to build for an entire day because they’re trying to upgrade a single building. However it is true that there are several other things you can potentially be using that time for, such as researching, making jobs and engaging in battles. However it is all too easy and too often happens that you have nothing to do but wait. There needs to be something to suck up little amounts of time, things that you can constantly be changing to keep yourself busy and ahead of all those other guys.

A major problem connected with the above post is that in no way can this game be considered “casual”. Every second you spend offline, someone else has the opportunity to surpass you, colonize your place and seize all your hard earned-wilds without you being at all aware until the next time you log on. There is no interest for me in playing this game casually as the potential to come back and find your work and armies decimated while you were eating dinner leaves a lingering sense of dread. A casual game to me is something you can pick up, play for a while, then leave and forget about for a while. This is not something you can only play once every few days or even once a day for a few minutes and expect to get any real sense of accomplishment. Every hour that you don’t play your rank drops like a rock and your enemies and friends outpace you and dwarf your tiny city. God forbid someone gets AP, then they can jump entire pages of ranks in a matter of minutes.

AP is another big issue that will definitely cause major schisms. It currently takes hours to trains units in Barracks, Stables or Workshop, however for the right price, you can simple buy yourself a bunch of Aglets from the item mall and trade them all in for hundreds of units. Furthermore you can simply spin that zodiac wheel and just get prize after expensive prize for a lot cheaper than actually buying the items from the mall. If you spin 500 gold worth of tries (100) you will not only get that item that was worth 500 gold, but 99 other things as well. At the same time, you will find yourself beset with a ton of junk, items you have absolutely no use for and can do nothing with. Simply being able to sell these items back for the gold they are worth would be an easy fix for these junk items.

And there is the matter of the items like Spices, Wines, Wool, etc. Incredibly hard to get by luck, and again makes me question the value of this game as a “casual” title. It took me over 30 attempts to get a single Spice. In that time I managed to receive more than 10 treasure maps. Why are the resources harder to find than treasure maps yet are actually labeled as “likely loot”? No casual player will want to spend all their time fighting again and again just to collect that one missing resource. Its a waste of their time. Meanwhile, for any AP buyer you can just outright buy the items in the mall and be done in seconds. Furthermore, you can spend AP to just advance any building instantly. While a non-AP buyer will have to wait an entire day for their lv8 rectorate, you can spend a tiny bundle of Gold to be done instantly and save over a day’s worth of time. Basically, AP buyers can outdistance non-AP buyers to where if you didn’t buy AP, you don’t even stand a chance.

Caesary though, is very management oriented and while there are not a lot of options for advancing your city, you do often need to make choices between best way to manage your resources. Much of the actual gameplay comes from battling however there is a problem here too. The battles themselves are boring as they are simply math problems that take forever to get over with and are virtually unrewarding. Heroes level very slowly and besides from the small profit you get from a victory, you get no since of fulfillment from attacking the same lv4 wilderness for the 100th time. You have no control over the actual battle and its just a matter of which numbers are higher. Replays are remotely interesting in that you actually get to see some action, but as you know the outcome, all you watch is little numbers appear and units die. I’ve watch a couple myself, but now just skip them completely. Greater control over battle situations would be greatly preferred, even if it was in the realm of having special defensive bonuses or attacking bonus depending on how you are attacking/defending. The real preferred would be control over the battle itself, even if it was turn-based. However you would keep the option to just “auto-attack” and let the numbers play out for you. However if you are skilled, you could use manual and potentially save more troops that way.

Finally, some parts of the game are still hard to understand or at least make sense of. Highest amongst these problems is the Market system of buying/selling resources. The options are very vague on how it works and its difficult for many players to understand what prices they should be buying and selling items for. Another major problem is the depositories in the League, especially for leagues that have reached level 10 and have no more use for the stored items. Not only can players still contribute resources that the Host/Vice Host can not use, but there is nothing explaining any of this to newcomers. If the host could potentially use these goods to upgrade the size of the league (as currently only AP buyers or lucky players can get the 300 size leagues) or could use the goods as “taxes” to give out to the members of the league or use for themselves.

In summary, here are the major points I would like to see addressed as far as I have been able to advance.
1. Graphic presentation of the game (better emails, website)
2. Better name if possible
3. More unique geographic features in-game, (cities, wilderness, maps)
4. More customization of the cities
5. Camera control
6. Amount of Downtime
7. Lack of protection while offline
8. Imbalance of AP buyers versus Non-AP buyers
9. Scarcity of needed resources
10. Control of battles that feel rewarding
11. Better market system
12. More League options

Things that look good:
1. Easy to get into
2. Expanding empire adds more involvement
3. Work in teams
4. Management of resources between cities
5. Small customizations such as character face, league emblem
6. Useful items
7. Good quest system to guide you
8. Open chat and league chat
9. some features change as upgrade them
10. Colonization feature allows feel of an “empire”
11. Attachment to certain heroes (often through renaming)
12. Can make aspects very personal (name cities/heroes after IRL things)

Basically I think Caesary is currently in need of development. It has a very good basic structure but it lacks the real immersion and control that I have come to expect from an RTS game.

Men: 7 Good Reasons Why Getting in Shape Will Improve Your Game With Women 100%

In my books and audio programs I like to kick around the term High Status Male a lot, but really, what does this mean?

Like a fine diamond, there are many facets to this idea of the high male status which can encompass qualities like power, looks, authority and wealth — balanced against physical strength and the ability to intimidate (even silently).  How much weight is given to these various aspects that make up who you are depends mainly on your age.  A younger man is not usually expected to have achieved the same level of wealth, power, fame or notoriety as an older man might’ve, but IS expected to have more in the way of physical strength and athletic ability going for him.

As time passes, the well-rounded man should have the center of his inner strength shift more away from the physical to the financial-achievement-notoriety side of the equation– but there’s no denying that it helps at every stage of your growth and experience as a man to have as much in the way of physical vitality always working for you.  It enhances your attractiveness towards women in many ways beyond the mere visible presentation that you make for yourself — going much deeper into different corners of her psyche.

Raising your male status is not something that happens accidentally by waving a magic wand around, it takes dedication and work to improve all those various important aspects of your life that matter the most. Meeting women isn’t just about laying down such a smooth rap that they instantly fall under your spell and begin loving you like mad.  Sure, the ability to talk is a crucial element in seduction (it’s your #1 power tool in fact), but so too is how much the stage is properly set with some good old non-verbal communication in advance of opening your mouth and spitting out that first word.

What I’m talking about is making an impressive (or at least an intriguing…. or at the VERY least NON-repulsive!!) visual presentation to women in order to appear on their radar first.  This perks up their interest and gets your foot in the door in the sense that you’re not always flying straight into abject disinterest each and every time that you try to start up a conversation with a girl cold!

But first let me show you 6 different ways that a stronger body works in your favor via its’ projection into your high status male display:

1)  Let’s start with the point I just made about getting your foot in the door, and by this I mean in the sense that you’ve got some little toehold of female interest going on BEFORE setting to the task of impressing her with your clever words. We’re talking about attracting female attention at the very least — and maybe even getting a few solid “GO” signals now and then to boot… hey, waddya know!

It’s that ‘come hither’ eye contact we live for… don’t we?  I’m talking about sparking up some visual juice so we don’t have to perform jumping jacks in her line of sight in order to get ourselves noticed?  Ever see how wimpy little guys with no physical mojo end up blending into the woodwork — or are forced to adopt “brilliant” flamboyant and sometimes even clown-like behaviors in order to get themselves noticed by women?  Do you want to be like that too?  All your life?

Forget all that.  Getting yourself into shape puts you up onto the radar screens of women and gets you a “hearing” — in other words, she gives you a chance to impress her.  NOW you can put your brilliant rap to work (the one that you learned from one of my books, right?… and diminish the entire fear of rejection factor.  Look, the best way to deal with fear of rejection is to arrange things for yourself so that you don’t have to even deal with it at all!

2)  As you progress in your fitness efforts and start getting more massive and well-defined, you’ll begin to make a more striking visual impression on everyone around you… and you’ll soon begin getting some positive feedback about yourself (perhaps for the first time in your life).  If you’ve never felt this before it can become totally intoxicating!  You will find yourself feeding off casual and even those nasty, jealousy-inspired compliments — and before long you’ll be motivated to start changing all sorts of stuff about your look and life.

Maybe you’ll cut your hair, or grow it long like I recently did.  Get a tat or a piercing, upgrade your wardrobe, re-work your entire style.  There’s no limit to where the changes wrought by a little body reshaping action could take you in terms of improving your look, your circle of friends and ultimately your entire life.  You will be kicking off a positive feedback loop that will boost your confidence on many different levels, challenging your old worn out beliefs and putting them to shame.

3)  Another benefit that I never realized until I started working out was the natural improvement it has on your posture. I actually started standing taller… it gave me an inch or two of apparent height!  Hey, the last thing you need to be doing when you’re 5’5″ (166 cm) like me is to walk around slouching so that you look even shorter, right?  People around me at work even noticed, and one guy accused me of wearing lifts.  Ha!

You’ll also FIT better in clothes as well, which is more important than you might think when it comes to making a solid first impression — not just with women but in the business world as well.  There’s nothing worse than wearing baggy-fitting clothes when you’re short.  It makes you look two feet tall.  Fitted clothes, on the other hand, will make you look more statuesque and a bit taller.  (btw, office politics are a microcosm of the real world in the sense that the men compete for power and status within the company, and the physically smaller guys are always at a disadvantage.  Ever notice how they always like to send some tall guy out to represent the company at conventions and meetings, etc.?)

4)  A powerful sense of self-confidence is the “muscle of attitude” that makes all the difference in the world when it comes to gaming women. To some limited degree confidence can be faked — and I even encourage this idea in my audio programs — but you and I know that there’s nothing that can totally replace the real thing.  “Fake-it-until-you-make-it” can only take you so far in the world — you will become exhausted and lose your nerve at some point.   A fully genuine confidence that comes deep from the inside out is THE #1 most powerful signal of male power there is, and women WILL take notice of it!

5)  Your bodybuilding efforts will NOT go unnoticed by your male friends either, and you will certainly begin to see some changes in their attitude towards you as your improving status begins to disturb the current pecking order among your circle of friends and co-workers.

Expect a few confrontations and maybe even some fights as your accelerating physical power begins to become regarded as a threat to guys who feel they should still retain a higher status than you.  Some will feel the need to knock you back “into your place” — but your NEW place is in a different HSM zip code now and they will just have to learn to deal with that!  These challenges and conflicts can be a rough spot in your development, your HSM ladder-climbing efforts, but they will happen and you need to be ready for them.  Just know that as you rise to meet these challenges one by one, your power, confidence and status will steadily move upwards with each new ladder rung achieved.

This is the journey of a Man –  a journey that you MUST undertake at some point in your life, or accept forever the low status male doormat role for yourself.

6)  We are all addictive personalities to some extent, and especially if we have toxic shame or some other dysfunction that we’re trying to escape from. Fitness and training can become addictive as well — and you may soon find yourself trading this far more healthy and life-energizing addiction for something that’s presently been dragging you down — like a booze or food or maybe even a masturbation addiction.  This could be a chance to swap endorphins and adrenaline for alcohol and/or donuts and get your health as well as your appearance fine tuned for a new life of power and social success!

The great thing is that you won’t even have to work on getting addicted to training and becoming more healthy once you start to channel some positive feedback, in both the way that you look and feel – and especially once you start drawing some natural interest from women!  Motivation will happen all on its own once your physical transformation begins to gain momentum.

Plus, as your body grows and begins to swap fat for muscle, a storm of new hormones and other powerful agents within the body will begin to work on your MIND as well as your physique.  This biochemical burst will tend to clarify your consciousness and begin to snuff out a lot of the “stinkin’ thinkin’ that lies at the heart of your current fears and neurotic tendencies.  The grip of shame, self-doubt and self-sabotage will begin to loosen their hold on your soul as your newfound physical strength begins to reconstruct your emotional reality as well as your body.

7)  The focus that you put into your training efforts will spread far and wide throughout your world. Don’t be surprised to find yourself instilled with a newfound discipline that will translate into other areas of your existence as well — not just those regarding women.  I’m talking about finding the courage and self-esteem to face major decisions that you may be putting off right now.

Things like: going to college, big career moves, joining the military, a relocation to another part of the country (or the world) in search of a new career path — or maybe just some great adventure?  Perhaps even a sports tryout, an acting or music audition?  Who knows where the sort of intense life-altering blast that you could get from a little physical training and bodybuilding might eventually take you?  Fitness and body building could become the springboard you’ve been looking for to lift yourself out of whatever life-rut that you may find yourself currently stuck in. There’s no denying that the physically more powerful men can move about in the world without fear, and this manifests itself in their attitude in ways that must smell like sheer sexual honey to most women.

Especially if you’re a young guy 16-35, you cannot afford to flounder around and wait for a Great Life to just show up at your doorstep one day and fall into your lap.  You’ve got to go out there and take it by the throat and claim it for yourself!

The Ryder Cup:  Golf’s Multi-National All-Star Game

Although the origins of golf are distinctly in Great Britain, America has adopted the game as its own . Golf is one of the most popular sports in America contested at every level from primary school through Universities. TV coverage and multi-billion dollar sports sponsorships have made it one of the  America’s richest professional games.

Organized tournaments between British and American golfers  began as early as 1921. The Walker Cup started in 1922 and still pits the best amateur golfers  of Britain against America in a bi-annual match. The Ryder Cup, also contested every other year was originally a match between Great Britain and America.

Samuel Ryder, according to a London newspaper report from 1925,  is the person who proposed an annual competition between British and American professionals.   The idea took hold in 1926 before The British Open and then the rules and format  were established in what has become one of golf’s most storied traditions.  Ryder, a multi-millionaire who had made his fortune by selling seeds, championed  this annual competition between British and American professionals.  An avid golfer and a businessmen, Samuel Ryder  commissioned a trophy for the competition in 1926 – what came to be the actual Ryder Cup itself.  The first “Official ” match was in 1927. The Americans did not win a match on British grass until  ten years later.  With the outbreak of World War II, The Ryder Cup was suspended from 1939-45, and the U.S. retained the trophy from its 1937 victory.  The Ryder Cup was interrupted for the second time in history following the September 11, 2001, attack upon America.   The 2001 Ryder Cup was rescheduled to the following year in 2002, with all future competitions conducted in even-numbered years.

The  Ryder Cup matches,  format and duration, have changed over the years, evolving to the current configuration: fourball and foursomes matches on the first two days, followed by singles matches on the third day, all 18 holes in length.   Each team is made up of 12 Players. The EU Team:

Four captain’s selections

The unique format , designed for the top Pro players in the World,   changed  but more notably the make-up of the Teams themselves are much different than originally intended.

The major change was expanding selection procedures to include players from the European Tournament Players’ Division.  The introduction of players from continental Europe into The Ryder Cup fold in 1979 marked a new chapter in the history of the biennial competition and after years of U.S. domination.  The U.S. had won all but one outing from 1959 to 1977, the exception being the tied match in 1969 at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. The changes in team selection procedure were approved by descendants of the Ryder family along with The PGA of America.

The Ryder Cup is the only sporting event that takes place under the EU Flag.

The Flag of Europe was created in 1955 and adopted by the European Union in 1986. Contrary to what some think, the number of stars never represented a number of countries, but instead 12 is a mathematical symbol of perfection and unity, as is a circle. The EU Flag was incorporated into the Ryder Cup Logo and now stands for a unified front  against America’s invasion of a UK invention.   The plan has worked beautifully for The Ryder Cup, television rights, merchandising  and sports coverage with the overall  Ryder Cup matches pretty much in a tie since 1979.

While the EU Flag might not instill the Patriotism and pride to Britons that the Stars and Stripes does for the Americans it does represent a great match up in the great game of golf.

Pair everyone up and have them search for as many pieces of streamer as they can find. They must work with their partner to tie each piece of streamer together to create one long piece of streamer. Whoever has the longest piece of streamer at the end of 15 minutes wins the game (It is OK if not every piece of ribbon is found).

2. WHO AM I?: Write the names of famous people from scary movies (can be character names or actor names, e.g. Dracula or Vincent Price) on index cards, and tape one card to the back of each guest. Have everyone walk around in the same room, and instruct them not to mention the name on each person’s back, but to talk to everyone as if they are the person whose name is on their card. As people begin to correctly guess their identity, they have to continue to treat the people who still don’t know their identity like the stars whose name is taped to their back. When everyone guesses their “true identity”, then the game is over.

3. RELAY RACES: If you want to get a little crazy, or if you have teenagers that need to let off a little energy, these relay races are sure to bring out the goofy side in everyone!

4. EVIL TWIN RELAY: Divide your guests into two teams. The Siamese Twins are formed by having 2 players stand back-to-back while linking their arms at the elbows. Have two guests demonstrate before the race begins. Their arms must stay linked at all times!! Have them try to walk together. Have the guests pair up with someone on their team. On the signal “Go”, the first set of Siamese Twins will walk to the bucket. When they reach the bucket, each player will take one treat out and then return to the starting line making sure that their arms are linked at all times! Continue playing until all of your guests have retrieved a prize from the bucket. The first team done wins!

5. SUCK IT UP: Put two chairs at one end of the room and put an empty Halloween container on each chair. Divide your guests into two teams and line them up in straight lines. Give everyone a straw and a ghost eraser. The first person in each line places the straw in their mouth and sucks in so that the ghost eraser sticks to the end. While continuing to suck in, they walk to the chair and drop their ghost into the container. They run back to the line and the next person will go. Be careful not to make your teammates laugh – it might cost you the game!

6. MYSTERIOUS BALLOON RELAY: Cut paper into small pieces. Think of some activities (take a drink, scream loudly, kiss someone) and write them on two pieces of paper (one for each team). Place one paper slip into a balloon and blow it up. Continue until you have enough balloons for each guest. Place the balloons in bags at the opposite end of the room. The first person in the team must run down, get a balloon, pop it, read the activity, do the activity and tag the next person in line. First team done wins!

7. HALLOWEEN STICKER STALKER: When your guests arrive, give each person 10 Halloween stickers. The object is to use up all your stickers by sticking on other guests – one sticker per guest. However, if the guest you are “stickering” catches you, he/she gets to stick one of his/her stickers on you. If you are “caught”, you must temporarily take your sticker back, and you can try to sticker that same person later (at your own risk). But if someone falsely accuses you of “stickering” him/her, then you can automatically put one of your stickers on that person. The first one to get rid of all 10 of their original stickers is the winner!
