ABSTRACT:

All over the world, true democracies are measured on not only how often they hold elections, but also how free and fair are the elections, how inclusive the elections are but also how competitive they are.  In both the presidential (United States) and parliamentary (United Kingdom) forms of governments, elections are a true measure of the strength of the democracy. There are different types of elections. They include general elections, by-elections, primary elections etc.

Elections are decision-making processes where the general citizens (those who are legally eligible to vote) choose the people who are to govern them for a certain period maybe four to five years. By conducting elections and choosing the government then what the people say is that the power given to the government belongs to the people.

ANALYSIS:

The United States elections of the year 2008 that are scheduled to take place on the fourth day of November 2008 will include presidential elections together with their vice presidents. At the same time new senators will be voted in, there will also be a couple of state and local elections without forgetting the election of new members of the House of Representatives. The elections will mark the 55th time that the country has held quadrennial elections in its history.

The 2008 general elections will be a very special election. This is because there is something that will be happening that more than half of all United States of America citizens have not seen in their lifetime. This is because the elections will mark the first time since 1928 that the country will be going into the ballot box without having an incumbent president or vice president carrying the ruling party’s flag to the elections.

This is because neither president bush (whose second term will be expiring-constitutionally he cannot vie) nor the vice president dick Cheney (has categorically refused to run) will be spearheading the campaigns.

Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama are the key leading candidates in the democratic front. Despite the fact that they have a similar overall cause, they have some key differences on some of the ways that they will address some key issues. These issues range from the housing sector, the energy sector, foreign affairs as well as healthcare.

In terms of foreign affairs especially concerning the war in Iraq and the fight against international terrorism, Obama has made his points clear unlike Clinton who looks a little bit indecisive. On this issue Obama, has made it clear that he would not fail to take action in Pakistan if there was “credible actionable intelligence”. In addition, Obama has criticized the bush Cheney model and has urged his rivals to come up with their views on the issue publicly and not conserve their views as if it is a concern for the white house.

In addition, Obama has stated that in order to guarantee peace then the American nation needs to move from a pinnacle of fear, instead move ahead with the great legacies of America’s forbearers, and practice their rights with hope, strength and optimism. As a result the famous line “let us never negotiate out of fear….but let us never fear to negotiate” has become a crucial campaign advert for the Obama camp.

On the other side, Hilary Clinton has been seen to avoid answering the question directly. However, she seems to support the bush style when she is quoted as saying that “the surge is working” in Iraq. However, she has said that she does not want to talk about the issue openly for the fear of propaganda. This statement has caused her to be criticized on many fronts since there is no time that the United States has taken the back seat on a contentious issue like this.

Another area where the two front-runners have conflicting ideas is in the field of health care and insurance. On this field, each of the two candidates has their own ways of going about it. Hilary Clinton hopes to make sure that all Americans are covered. This will be done in two different ways. Firstly, there will those who will be covered officially through the government or private sector schemes. Secondly, she intends the rest of the people to be covered through some kind of “individual mandate”, however, she has not directly indicated how this individual mandate will be achieved but she has suggested that she would seek the congress to implement some enforcement mechanism.

On the other side of the table, barrack Obama is of the view of introducing medical insurance cover for all Americans. This view has been criticized by his rivals who claim that this is practically impossible. In his defense for his pledge, Obama has reiterated that what he envisaged was free insurance cover for all children. Thus as this process goes on he has claimed that at the end it will be equivalent to free medical insurance for all Americans.

CONCLUSION:

Compared to other general elections the 2008 presidential elections seem to be the one that will be contested. This is firstly because no incumbent will be running. Historically incumbents have a relatively higher chance of being elected. Secondly, the 2008 elections has become some kind of an online election. In search of votes, many candidates have turned to the internet. As a result, history is in its making as republican candidate Ron Pol sends records tumbling as he made history by raising .2 million in a single day on November 5 2007.

In addition to this there is a new debate springing up within the political divide. With support for African-American candidate, barrack Obama increasing, new questions of whether the time is ready for America to have a black president have become commonplace.

Because of all this, campaign issues have gone further this time round to encompass issues that are centuries old like the issue of slavery and slave trade. In addition to this, issues of religion have sprung up especially after it had been falsely rumored that the democratic, African-American candidate barrack Obama was indeed a Muslim and that he had attended the Madrasa some place in Philippines or Indonesia.

Every President has a unique style of speaking and dealing with issues. Barack Obama recently gave his first State of the Union address. In listening to him speak about all the problems the country faces in 2010, it brought to mind the early days of the presidency of George Bush and his early speeches when he had to deal with the worst attack against the United States homeland in its history and the prospect of an uncertain future where the seemingly invulnerable United States was now facing the very real possibility of additional attacks. What if George Bush’s style was more like the style of Barack Obama? What if the two Presidents could be merged and you could create a new President by the name of George W.H. Obama. It is early 2002. Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States…

President George Obama: Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens: America this evening is a nation called to great responsibilities. And we are rising to meet them. In the normal course of events, Presidents come to this chamber to report on the state of the Union. My fellow citizens, the entire world has seen for itself the state of our Union — and it is strong. We have seen it in the courage of passengers, who rushed terrorists to save others on the ground; we have seen it in the endurance of rescuers, working past exhaustion. We have seen the unfurling of flags, the giving of blood, the saying of prayers. We are a country awakened to danger and called to defend freedom. Our grief has turned to anger, and anger to resolution. Whether we bring our enemies to justice, or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done.

One year ago, I took office amid an underfunded military and a depleted and dispirited CIA. High level security agencies lacked the ability to share information. We were attacked in 1993 in New York’s World Trade Center and the previous administration handled it as if it were a bank robbery, rather than an act of war. We were attacked at Khobar Towers and the previous administration again looked at it as an isolated incident. 17 sailors were killed and 39 were injured when two members of Al-Qaeda blew up their small craft next to the USS Cole in Yemen — President Clinton’s response? He said “Their tragic loss reminds us that even when America is not at war, the men and women of our military still risk their lives for peace. ” Not at war President Clinton? You may not have been at war with them but they were certainly at war with us. How many acts of terrorism would it take for the previous administration to wake up to the danger? Even when our soldiers suffered the humiliating indignity of being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, President Clinton continued to treat terrorist attacks as if they were no worse than a robbery at a local deli.

We had at least four known documented opportunities to capture or kill Osama bin Laden and the previous administration turned it down. As for Iraq, I know that many of you in this chamber are apprehensive about the possibility of going to war there. I have to remind our distinguished members of congress that if the previous administration did not show weakness and allow weapons inspectors to be thrown out of Iraq, we would not have lost years of intelligence gathering and we might not be in the position now where war is necessary.

In short, we inherited a disastrous mess from the previous administration. A year later, however, we have taken action and have corrected some of the horrific mistakes of the last eight years. We have removed the wall of separation between various intelligence gathering agencies that proved so ineffective in dealing with terrorism. We have taken terrorists off the battle field and not treated them as common criminals but as the enemy combatants that they are. We have housed them in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where the military can interrogate them and get the needed information to prevent future attacks. Our goal not being one to simply punish those caught committing acts of terrorism, but to prevent future attacks. We will use common sense intelligence gathering, not all of which that can be revealed for obvious reasons.

There is a fine line between trampling the rights of individual citizens and common sense surveillance. Let’s remember where the blame for this lies. We are reacting to the real threat posed by terrorists who are obsessed with destroying our country. The ineffective and irresponsible way that Washington has dealt with this problem over the last eight years has made certain procedures necessary in order to protect the country. Because of the reckless and irresponsible behavior of Washington, we are forced to allocate money to a brand new office – The Office of Homeland Security. We need to upgrade procedures and computer systems of our Intelligence gathering organizations and we will need to increase funding for the military to make up for the funding shortages of the last eight years. This is a tremendous expenditure that I would rather not have to make but thanks to the previous administration, I have no choice.

Because of all the money we now have to spend on security, coupled with the recession that we inherited, we will need to spend much of the budget surplus. Let me make this perfectly clear. The budget surplus was built on a house of cards. There was a new medium — the internet — that busted out during the previous administration. The Dot Com companies created a lot of investment in an unpredictable, untested environment. Their failure was inevitable. Their business practices were shabby and wasteful. Coupled with the tragic cuts to the military and to our intelligence services, the budget surplus of the previous administration was bound to end. You can only put paper clips and rubber bands on the military and the economy for so long before you need to go in and spend the money you need to really fix things, which my administration is prepared to do.

With all the problems that I inherited from the previous administration, I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and say to my lovely wife Laura Michelle, “Oy Gevalt! What have I gotten myself into!” But for the good of the nation I will trudge on. For the nation needs me now more than ever. I am the President. I won the election. I am Commander-In-Chief, the leader of the free world. I am George Obama.

I n fact, the economic problems that we inherited are on the verge of being solved. I am going to cut taxes which will cause investment opportunities. I predict that due to these tax cuts the unemployment rate will drop by the mid 2000s to a miniscule 4.5% so that despite the increased spending on the security of our country, made necessary by the previous administration, we will still manage to revive the economy and keep our country safe at the same time.

Let us not forget what happened on September 11, 2001. It is my fear that as the decades go by and this horrific event fades into the past, we may be lured into the same false sense of security that got us in trouble in the first place. We weren’t attacked for anything we did, we were attached because of the values we espouse, and these are good values. They are not values to be ashamed of. They are values worth defending and we must be vigilant in defending them.

It is my hope that in the months and years ahead, life will return almost to normal. We’ll go back to our lives and routines, and that is good. Even grief recedes with time and grace. But our resolve must not pass. Each of us will remember what happened that day, and to whom it happened. We’ll remember the moment the news came — where we were and what we were doing. Some will remember an image of a fire, or a story of rescue. Some will carry memories of a face and a voice gone forever.

The course of this conflict is not known, yet its outcome is certain. Freedom and fear, justice and cruelty, have always been at war, and we know that God is not neutral between them. Fellow citizens, we’ll meet violence with patient justice — assured of the rightness of our cause, and confident of the victories to come. In all that lies before us, may God grant us wisdom, and may He watch over the United States of America.

Everyday, we hear the news of the debated economic stimulus package. We sit back and wonder how this will directly help us. Each of us has a unique perspective on the stimulus, and we all have different needs for where, when, and how the stimulus may or may not personally help.

Many Americans are asking about a stimulus program to help the average citizen. People today need help with their rent and mortgages. Even keeping food on the table has become a challenge with grocery prices skyrocketing over the past year.

Previous economic stimulus packages have sent rebate checks directly to taxpayers. Most of this money paid directly to the people was simply forwarded onto creditors to pay down debt. So the previous attempts at stimulating the economy simply sent money into the pockets of the banks and credit card companies. The current stimulus plan does not contain any provisions to send money directly to the people, and the debt balance for most people continues to grow.

For a person with overwhelming debt, any stimulus received would be used to pay down that debt. Without the government’s help, many people are finding that they can create their own personal stimulus package by completely eliminating 100% of their debts from credit cards and personal loans. Instead of waiting for help, they are taking responsibility for their own financial future. Of course, personal responsibility is what this country was founded on.

Without debt, and without the monthly credit card payments, hundreds of dollars per month are saved on principal, interest and other fees. For some people, this can be thousands of dollars per year in savings. It could also be the difference between financial comfort and bankruptcy.

A debt elimination program is not applicable to secured debts such as mortgages and auto loans. Student loans and medical bills also do not apply. But without the credit card payments, extra money would be available to help pay for other obligations in life.

The debt elimination program is not for everybody. It is imperative that some time be set aside to understand just how and why the debt can be wiped clean. An elimination program is not bankruptcy, consolidation, or a home refinance. Having a basic understanding of the premise of the program will also remove any fear that someone has in regards to proceeding with this debt relief method.

A person does not need to become a lawyer to understand this process. You just need to be open to some unfamiliar information. This is time well spent considering the thousands of dollars of debt that can be eliminated. There is also no cost to obtain this understanding, for this is not secret information, just hard to find. You will not be spoon-fed this knowledge from our main information sources, such as television, newspapers, co-workers, and our parents.

By taking control of your debt, you will initiate your own personal economic stimulus plan. And you don’t need an act of congress to accomplish it. A little knowledge can set you free.

It seems President Obama is treading on eggshells trying to keep both the LGBT community and Christian fundamentalists happy…

In a meeting with Catholic Media at The White House President Obama has taken the opportunity to raise the issue of the Catholic Church’s views on gay and lesbian rights, “For the gay and lesbian community in this country, I think it’s clear that they feel victimized in fairly powerful ways and they’re often hurt by not just certain teachings of the Catholic Church, but the Christian faith generally.” The statement, made during a recent 45min roundtable with members of the Roman Catholic news media, will undoubtedly please LGBT rights campaigners in the US where the repeal of proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, is a hot issue.

Obama did add however “As a Christian, I’m constantly wrestling with my faith and my solicitude and regard and concern for gays and lesbians” affirming his commitment to Christian values. The President is a supporter of gay civil unions but has stated that he personally believes “It’s up to religious nominations to determine whether they want to recognize that as marriage or not”.

Dan Gilgoff, religion reporter for U.S. News and World Report commented “This is trademark Obama, seeming to effortlessly appeal to cultural conservatives and social liberals in the same breath. Religious folks, cultural conservatives included, will appreciate that Obama takes his faith seriously enough that he’s struggling with how to reconcile it with his commitment to gays and lesbians. Social liberals and the LGBT community will appreciate that he’s unequivocal about that commitment.”
