The second half of the century had the Cubs being competitive still while at the same time producing legends of the game like Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg and Sammy Sosa.

The new millennium proved more tough for the Cubs as they struggled producing winning seasons. But come 2007, the Cubs were infused new life following a ?disastrous?? 2006 that saw them win just 66 games. The club regrouped and signed left-fielder Alfonso Soriano to a lucrative contract and Piniella came on board to replace Dusty Baker as manager.

The Cubs completed a turnaround in 2007, topping the NL Central with a record of 85-77, and faced the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Division Series, eventually losing to the D-Backs via a three-game sweep.
In 2008, the Cubs took off from where they left in 2007 as they successfully defended their National League Central title with a record of 97-65. This marked the first time that The Cubbies made the postseason in consecutive years since 1906-1908. The year also proved momentous as it saw the team win its 10,000th game and laid witness to the first no-hitter by a Cubs player in 36 years when Carlos Zembrano achieved the feat in September against the Houston Astros. The Cubs dominated the 2008 All-Star Game as well, with a franchise-record seven representatives in the midseason classic at Yankee Stadium, including three starters — Soriano, rookie catcher Geovany Soto, and Japanese Kosuke Fukudome. The Cubs then faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS where they bowed to the latter in three games.

Despite all the negotiations over finding a new owner for the storied club, the team is dead set on improving. To sustain the momentum the Cubs have built in the last two seasons, the club extended the contract of GM Hendry to another four years. Since taking the GM post in 2002, Hendry has gotten his team to three postseason appearances. He has vowed to continue working to help the Cubs get back to the World Series and eventually winning it all again.
The Cubs also picked up the -million option on righthander hurler Rich Harden as well as preparing for talks with Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood, both free agents, to further shore up their pitching roster.

While the 100-year-old title drought has yet to be broken by the Cubs, their back-to-back NL Central titles in the last two years bode well for the organization and its fans. With the progress they have made, it could only be a matter of time before the championship returns to the North side of Chicago.

The Rockies lost, 3-0. Four days later, the franchise played their first home game at Mile High Stadium. It was also the first their time to win in franchise history, 11-4, over the Montreal Expos.

Just like any expansion team, the Rockies struggled in their first year but the team was able to finish season with 67 wins to set a record for a National League expansion franchise.

On April 4, 1999, the Rockies made history as they played their Opening Day game at Estadio de Beisbol Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico against the defending National League champion San Diego Padres This marks the first time Major League Baseball opened the regular season outside the United States or Canada. After trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres for most of 2007 Major League Baseball season, the Rockies bounced back with a steady series of wins, eliminating the Dodgers from playoff contentions in the process. The Rockies finished the regular season with a 90-73 mark, a franchise record. They were tied with the Padres for the National League wild card spot in the playoffs. On October 1, the two teams played a wild card tie-breaker game at Coors Field to determine the wild card. With the score tied at 6-6, the Padres got two runs off of a Scott Hairston home run. The Rockies came back in the bottom of the 13th by scoring three runs off of closer Trevor Hoffman to win 9?8. The Rockies? victory came with the fifth greatest regular season comeback in Major League Baseball history.

The Rockies ended up the 2008 season finishing third place in the National League West with a record of 74-88.

Eventually, the Astros became known for their on-field play, in particular in the 1980s, when they experienced more team success, with the help of future Hall-of-Famers Nolan Ryan and Joe Morgan who both infused much-needed leadership to the team. During the decade, Houston barged into the play-offs for the first time and won the NL West title by edging the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Astros finished with a 93-77 record that year. The club, however, lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Championship Series but not after putting a tough fight. To date, the Astros-Phillies series of 1980 is considered one of the best postseason matchups in baseball history. The Astros followed this up with postseason appearances in 1981 and 1986.

The 1990s were also memorable for the Houston franchise as this was the time many changes happened for the team. The Astros by this time were bannered by the likes of Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio. New owner McLane took over the team in 1993 and along with his arrival came more success as the Astros won consecutive division titles in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

At the turn of the new millennium, the Astros move out of the Astrodome and settled to its new and current stadium, which was known then as Enron Field. The ballpark features a retractable roof which many believe is very functional for a place like Houston.

But the single biggest season for the Astros came in 2005 when they finally went over the hump and made their way to their first-ever World Series. Despite starting the season poorly, going 15 games below .500 by late May that year, Houston fashioned out an amazing winning run and went 42-17 thereafter to take the lead for the wild-card. They eventually won a wild-card berth on the final day of the regular season. In the National League Division Series the Astros defeated the Atlanta Braves in four games. Houston then beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS in seven games, avenging their loss to the Cards in the 2004 NLCS, to win their first-ever pennant. The Astros met the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. But Houston fell short as they were swept by the White Sox 4-0.

Preston Gomez was a Major League player, manager, coach, scout, executive and special assistant to the general manager and he wore each role well in its respective time. Gomez was hit by a truck last year at Spring Training in Arizona in March. He died from some of the complications of his injuries in Fullerton, California.

Gomez was a pioneer and ambassador. “The Angels family has lost one of its invaluable members,” said Tony Reagins, Angels general manager. “His influence and impact on so many throughout the industry is impossible to measure. Preston’s legacy will forever remain a part of this organization.”

Gomez began his career as a player in 1944. The 21-year old native of Havana, Cuba became a shortstop and played with the Washington Senators. He made history in 1969 by accepting the first manager position for the San Diego Padres. The Padres expressed deep sadness at Gomez passing, commenting that his love of the game made a lasting impression.

During his playing career, Gomez batted .286 in eight games but then spent the balance of his playing career in the Minors. 1951 was his best season with 9 home runs, 58 RBIs and batting .268 for a team in Pennsylvania know as Three Rivers.

His managing career in the Minor League included the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati and the New York Yankees. Gomez also coached St. Louis and Houston. In 1965, Gomez accepted the position of third-base coach with the Dodgers and served for four seasons, during which time he earned a World Series title and two National League pennants. “The man spent his entire life in baseball,” said former Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda.
