I ask this in all seriousness. I ve learned alot over my 40 years about how slavery has hurt the blacks/African Americans for more than a century. I feel slavery was/is very wrong. But, I see many act very overly proud of there heritage and fly there respective African countrys flag and take on the black African cultural things such as wearing Dasheekis(sp.) and adapting certain rituals to their lives here in the ‘somewhat United’ States. Once again, I think slavery was/is bad and wrong. So why dont African Americans want to move back to Africa? They call it the ‘motherland’ .Do you feel that Africa is where your heart is? Maybe its just too hard to buy a house or get a paying job or go to college or get medical attention or go to the mall in all the 3rd world countries of Africa, so you stay in the land of milk and honey. Given all you know now , was slavery a necessary evil for the advancement of the black race or would you rather it never happened and still be in Africa?

i think it means a numerous amount of things. I think being patriotic means to appreciate, respect, love and most of all to support your country. If you march in parades, support the troops, donate, sing the star spangled banner and wave an American flag soaring in the air proudly that also shows patriotism for the United States(or country that you live in).

Yesterday I was at the United Nations gift shop and bought a mug, a set of flags, and a flag base. Despite its status as an international territory that is not a part of the United States (and by extension, New York State and City), I was charged regular New York sales tax on my purchases. Can anyone explain why this is the case?

I have seen in these united states, immigrant’s flying the flag of a certain country, after buying the land, as if they just conquered. These are some mean people who are only, when it comes down to it, allegiant to each other.

I’m pretty sure someone is going to claim, I’m sayin something wrong. Well that is what happens when right is wrong and wrong is right. I see many complaining about immigrant rights. I think their weapons are to use a weak system against its self. Immigrant until sworn in, have no rights.

These united states are being simply conquered by hostile neighbors whose real allegiance is to each other, not caring whose in their way as they go.

Look at the difference in our country over the last thirty year. Its a locust effect.

It seems like this is blatant racism. I’ve heard the excuse that people are just trying to show "support" for their "family history", but I don’t buy that. Especially when I see people with HUGE full sized flags. This is the United States. Not the Confederate States.
To those of you telling me that it’s not a symbol of racism: Just like someone else answered, it is a symbol of that period of racism and the country that was defending it. I don’t care what ELSE they were fighting for. They fought for racism. It’s comparable to the swastika. Yes, it’s a religious symbol, and originally was not a bad symbol. But if you had roots in those religions… or, more extremely, if you had roots in Germany, would you waive your Swastika flags high and proud behind your truck?

I don’t understand how a country could just change their flag as if their past didn’t happen, that would be like asking the United States to change their flag and drop all the stars cause they want to forget that we took/bought/acquired so many different territories over the years.

I have been dating a guy who is 32, he has lived in this country for almost 12 years now.

This week he will become a citizen of the United States. I would love to buy him a gift to remember this special occasion.

The popular horizontal stars and stripes is actually a military flag that indicates military authority. The civil flag has the stripes going vertically with a white background behind blue stars.
