Why is New York sales tax charged at the United Nations gift shop?
Yesterday I was at the United Nations gift shop and bought a mug, a set of flags, and a flag base. Despite its status as an international territory that is not a part of the United States (and by extension, New York State and City), I was charged regular New York sales tax on my purchases. Can anyone explain why this is the case?

Because they were sold specifically for import in to New York.

It’s the only way the US can get money back from the useless delegates that work there.

The items were manufactured or imported from the US, then taken back to the US, hence US customs duty or sales tax is applicable for re imported items.

I really an not sure why. But, I have a favour to ask you. I have a united nations mug that crashed and broke. My daighter loves the mug and I am trying to locate a store I can get a new one. It is white, blie border on handle and sipping area, it simply has the united nations emblem on the front. Can you tell me wher you shopped?

Bacause the UNited Nations is not set up to an organization that is responsible for taxes. But the company that sells them still is responsible for taxes because they are selling them on New York soil. It would be under Norway rules if the shop were in Norway and such. That gift shop does not have dimplomatic immunity.
