10 Fast Ways to Alter Your Fireplace-less Fireside from a African american Hole to a Worthy Focal Point

Most folks enjoy a fireplace aglow having a roaring fireplace or flickering embers. But your fire need to have not be a gaping empty gap–as becoming a picture frame with no picture—-those occasions you not have a fire.

As you review these ideas, you’ll also recognize any in which will have to be modified if you’ve small children or pets with access to the fire.

• Ivy Holder: A lovely basket filled having a thriving ivy place adds a touch of dynamics to your location. Let the ivy trail onto your fireplace to keep the fashion informal.

• Autumn Fruit and vegetables: Within the tumble, produce an agreement of pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, and silk leaves within autumn colors. Set some of your own greens on upturned wooden bowls to differ their heights.

• Pine Cones: An set up of pinecones of varying sizes, exhibited in a large basket, wood pan, firewood basket, or perhaps an old washtub works well for a causal country style. Scatter some of the pinecones around the pot, too.

• Pottery Container & Dried Crops: For another country autumn look, display a large ceramic jug in your fireplace place, and around the idea make a reduce arrangement of connected, dried grapevine. Associate some other clusters of dried crops into the grapevine. Dried baby’s breath, for example, continues the look open up and airy.

• Poinsettias: Blooming poinsettias, particularly ones so major they practically fill the fireplace, seem stunning during the winter months. Depending on your living space, the white kinds may be more dramatic than the reddish ones. Put smaller potted poinsettias around the fireside.

• Tropical Vignette: Let your hearth provide the frame for a sultry retreat vignette while summer rolls around. Together having a piece of driftwood, display large seashells and colorful cup fishing balls—some perched on the driftwood or on bright candle holders to offer them height.

The actual truly venturesome may set these different goodies on a starting of rippling white sand.

• Party Balloons: Bash time? Inflate balloons in keeping with your party’s color scheme. Load the fire full of the balloons (not helium ones!), using the hearth screen or wine glass doors to hold your balloons in place.

Link the ribbons of three helium balloons to a weighty object, such as a wrapped brick wrapped as a “present,” at either side from the fire.

• New Year’s Vignette: When it’s time to ring in New Calendar year, first tape two taut strings within your fire, above where they will be seen. Run each one from a front corner for the opposite back nook, so the guitar strings form an A.

Unroll one*fourth inch extensive white, silver, along with black party streamers and drape all of them over the strings so they hang down at different lengths into the fire. Next, unroll much more streamers and all they wanted spread a serious pile onto the particular fire floor.
Currently add the appropriate props: champagne bottles and glasses, party hats and horns, a large clock set with almost midnight, or even metallic numerals from the New Year. To boost some object, established them on bins hidden under the streamers.

• Fresh Flowers: There’s not any time of year when a large bouquet involving fresh flowers set in your fireplace probably will not look great. Forget the silk ones, however. Let’s not small one ourselves that our company will continue to presume that they are actual when they’ve witnessed them time and again.

• Fireplace Candelabra: But, when you are like many of us whom feel that a fire just needs your flicker of hearth to look the best, consider a fireplace candelabra, a candlestick holder designed specially for your hearth. You can have a fireplace aglow with light without a solitary stick of firewood in sight or expense of petrol logs.

Some fireplace location candelabras are trim enough to fit facing your existing andirons and grate while some are make in order to fill your unfilled fire. Select candle for your hearth location candelabra in shades that accent any room or set a new holiday’s or person’s color scheme.

Consequently, your fire-less fire don’t ought to be a Black Opening after all! You can create your hearth, the particular natural focal point of the room, worth considering even when there won’t be any burning logs.

Fly Fish for Trout — Does Fly Line Color Matter?

Fly Fish for Trout — Does Fly Line Color Matter?

When you are fly fishing for trout, the main purpose of the fly line is to carry the fly to the fish. The fly itself is basically weightless; so it will not help you reach across the stream to that exact spot where you are sure a “lunker” is waiting. Your fly line does all the distance work for you — with your knowledge and skill of how to cast of course.

Fly line density is the technical term here. Density refers to whether the fly line will float or sink; and, if it sinks, how deep and how fast.

There are five densities available; the floating line, sink-tip line, intermediate sinking line, sinking line or fast-sinking line.

FLOATING LINE

The floating line does precisely as named – it floats. Perceived as the easiest to cast and a mandatory first for beginning fly fishing anglers, the floating fly line is undoubtedly the most popular. This is the preferred line when fishing with dry flies; and is also used with streamers and nymphs. With dry flies, the goal is to mimic a floating insect which primarily stays on the surface with occasionally the current pulling it slightly under.

Unlike dry flies, streamers and nymphs come in a variety of weights which allows them to sink slightly and then we pulled to the surface when retrieved. Again, this movement is designed to look like the aquatic food of the trout with its natural shape and movement and thus provokes a nice trout to “get his dinner”.

SINK-TIP LINE

The sink-tip line is the second most popular as it combines both a floating and sinking line. The first 10-30 feet of line sink while the remainder of the fly will continue to float.

Nymphs and streamers are used with the sink-tip line as it takes these flies deeper but allows them to come easily to the surface when retrieved. The feeding depth of the trout may cause you to use this line as it will help you put the trout’s meal in his feeding zone.

INTERMEDIATE SINKING LINE

An intermediate sinking line will sink completely but at a slower rate than a normal sinking line. Anglers who want their fly to settle down into the water very slowly prefer this type of fly line. This is a very good line to use when the fish are at varying levels and you want your fly to look natural as it descends.

SINKING LINE

The sinking line descendes at a uniform rate fairly quickly. The rate of descent varies from two inches per second to ten inches per second. This line is used because you know the trout are feeding deep and you want to get down to them.

FAST SINKING LINE

Finally, a fast sinking line sinks like a stone, as the name suggests. This line is also designed and manufactured to sink at varying faster rates. This is the line of choice when you want to get your fly really deep; really fast.

FLY LINE COLOR

At this point, probably the only other thing to mention is the color of the fly line. When you go looking for fly line you will find it in a variety of colors.

Floating line color is a personal choice and you will see bright yellows and oranges being the predominant choices. Sinking lines are dark to hide the line from the fish in deeper water. The fish are less likely to see the darker line than a bright one.

If you are using a floating line you can select the color you feel is easiest for you to see. The reason for this is that the fish will notice the floating line, regardless of its color. On the end of the floating line you attach a clear line called a tippet. The tippet is usually around eight to ten feet in length. So even if the fish sees the floating line, it will not see the tippet attached to the fly.

Okay, enough talk about what and how; pick up your rod and reel; go get your line and flies and get out there and catch some trout. Here’s to you yelling “Fish On!”

While an optimistic outlook isn’t a cure-all, studies show that people with one have greater resistance to disease, recover more quickly from illness and live longer. If you have trouble seeing the upside now, surround yourself with people who do. Then try this exercise: On a piece of paper, draw two columns. Write down all your pessimistic thoughts on your health on the left and balance each with a positive statement on the right. Tear away the negative column and hang the optimistic list on your fridge to glance at throughout the day.

You’ll feel more focused and less flustered in seconds.
- Betsy Stephens, certified yoga instructor and senior fitness editor, FITNESS.

#13. The secret to a Healthy Pregnancy: Give your Gums the Star Treatment.
It could benefit your entire body. A recent study found that young people, especially those in their twenties, are likely to get periodontal disease in their back teeth, which can be associated with pregnancy-related problems as well as heart disease. Brush and floss your back teeth carefully and have them regularly cleaned and checked by a dentist. You may also want to soak up a little sun, safely, of course. New research found that people with higher blood levels of vitamin D may be less likely to develop gum disease.
-Research from the School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Boston University’s Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

#14. The secret to Strong Legs and a Toned Butt: Get a leg up.
Lift one foot an inch or two off the floor as you do your deadlifts, dumbbell shoulder presses or biceps curls; switch legs before you begin the next set. This helps train and strengthen the leg’s smaller, deeper stabilizing muscles, which will make legs look more sculpted. You’ll also burn more calories than you would working both legs simultaneously.
- Chris Uy, fitness manager at The Sports Club/LA in New York City.

#15. The secret to Looking Fab in Photos: Don’t just pose- do something!
Movement adds energy to the photo and can help you look less stiff and feel more comfortable. Tell the photographer to put on some music you love before shooting so that you can begin camping it up like a supermodel. Look over your shoulder, twirl your skirt, lift your child high in the air!
-Tara Canova, deputy photo editor, FITNESS.

#16. The secret to Not Fainting when having a Blood Test: Tense you Muscles.
Simultaneously contracting the muscles in your arms, legs, torso and neck can apply enough external pressure to blood-vessel walls to prevent the drop in blood pressure that causes fainting. Do this exercise in sets of five, five times a day (hold each contraction for 10 seconds), so you can become familiar enough with the technique to apply it at the doctor’s office.
- Mark Watling, M.D., coauthor of Overcoming Medical Phobias (New Harbinger Publications, 2006).

#17. The secret to Curing a Sinus Trouble: Toss your pillow.
Your bedding may be harboring millions of fungi. Aspergillus fumigatus, the species found most commonly in pillows, can worsen asthma, particularly in adults who’ve had it for many years, and cause allergic sinusitis in those with allergic tendencies. When you buy a new pillow, consider one with feathers, as more fungi were found in the synthetic variety.
-Study from the University of Manchester in England.

6 Steps to Nirvana in Customer Care

A customer service agent’s job is not restricted to answering phone calls, like we all would like to believe, and neither is it
mechanical and boring as it is made to sound. Look at the tens of spreadsheets an agent toggles between to give you the
right answer, and you will realize how complicated and stressful the job can be.
An agent has to maintain strict quality standards, handle huge call volumes, deal with irate callers and adhere to strict
deadlines – all of which are undoubtedly stressful. Combine this with the current economic scenario of lay-offs, cost-
cutting measures, and rising workloads, and clearly employee morale can hit an all-time low. But we at WNS recognize
how that can impact our client’s business and take many measures to keep our agents happy and inspire them to deliver
better customer service.
Here are a few areas we focus on and the initiatives we undertake toward achieving the same:
Employee Engagement: Front-line employees are ambassadors of an organization, and there should be continuous
efforts to keep them aligned with the business strategy. Customer service executives must understand that they are a part
of a bigger whole, and must constantly work towards that. It not only builds their self-esteem, but also makes them realize
how important their job is. At WNS, Town hall meetings are hosted by business leaders at regular intervals to brief
employees on new programs. Communication calendars are published every month to keep employees informed on all
company initiatives.
Open Communication Channels: I have always believed in ‘tell them what they need to do, but also listen to what they
want to do’. The leadership team must focus on two-way and ongoing communication by inviting feedback and
suggestions, organizing informal dialogues and face-to-face meetings. WNS holds skip sessions and team meetings with
agents on the floor to get a feel of the employee morale and resolve any concerns with the team managers. Night-walks
are conducted by team leads / business leaders, to spend time on the floor with agents. We also aim to provide flexibility
with rosters to accommodate leave / shift requests, and have set in place secure grievance and complaint handling
processes.
Recognition and Rewards: Recognition is an integral part of employee morale. Who would not want a pat on the back!
Progress made by individual employees should be awarded and appreciated publicly to retain talent and accelerate
performance.
Celebrate their achievements through formal channels, team meetings, bulletin board announcements, cash incentives
and awards. WNS initiatives such as Blooming Tree, weekly rewards on performance, the Kalpavriksha Recognition Tree
for agents who get appreciation calls, issue of Green Flags for handling calls effectively, continuous projection of
achievers, coffee with the leadership team for top performers are compelling initiatives to boosting agent morale.
Encouraging Innovation: We believe that some of our best business ideas have actually come from the floor! Our
Brainwave program encourages innovative ideas from all the employees in the organization. Our experience at WNS
shows us that this allows employees to have a sense of ownership. Always remember that the contact center staff
receives direct customer feedback on a regular basis and their insights can provide valuable ideas.
wns.com – Insights – Blogs – Customer Care Outsourcing

Investing in Training and Development: Employees need to be constantly upskilled on best practices. This helps
increase their commitment to the organization as it chalks out a path for professional and personal growth. At WNS, we
ensure that at least 10-15 percent of the employees undergo training and development exercises. We conduct Manager
Marathons, where managers compete on parameters such as performance and other critical areas (attrition and
unplanned leaves). Senior agents are given additional roles and responsibilities in an effort to break the monotony of day-
to-day work.
Organize Recreational Activities: We believe that a break from the usual day is always welcome. Talent hunts, theme
parties, team outings help in team building and make the work place interesting. At WNS, a ‘fun committee’ comprising
agents and the HR team come up with new and creative ways to unwind while at work. These include parties to celebrate
success or process milestones, parties around important festivals, summer getaways, dance competitions, spot quizzes
and various contests. An interesting concept we recently introduced was ‘Call the Parents’, wherein supervisors took time
out to call family members and speak to them about the great work being achieved by the agent.
Having happy, involved and committed customer care agents has a direct correlation to improved customer service,
increased efficiency and revenue growth. There is undoubtedly a tangible impact that happy agents have on the customer
experience, and at WNS, we strongly believe that employee happiness creates the optimal customer experience

WNS Global Services is a leading global business process outsourcing company. Deep industry and business process knowledge, a partnership approach, comprehensive service offerings and a proven track record enables us to deliver business value to companies.

History

The beginning of racing

Racing began soon after the construction of the first successful petrol-fueled automobiles. The first race ever organized was on April 28, 1887 by the chief editor of Paris publication Le Vlocipde, Monsieur Fossier.[citation needed] It ran 2 kilometers from Neuilly Bridge to the Bois de Boulogne. It was won by Georges Bouton, in a car he had constructed with Albert, the Comte de Dion, but as he was the only competitor to show up it is rather difficult to call it a race.

Paris-Rouen. World’s first motor-race

Georges Lematre classified 1st in his Peugeot 3hp

On July 22 1894, the Parisian magazine Le Petit Journal organised what is considered to be the world’s first car race from Paris to Rouen,[n 1] sporting events were a tried and tested form of publicity stunt and circulation booster. Pierre Giffard, the paper’s editor, promoted it as a Competition for Horeseless Carriages (Concours des Voitures sans Chevaux) that were not dangerous, easy to drive, and cheap during the journey. Thus it blurred the distinctions between a reliability trial, a general event and a race, but the main prize was for the first across the finish line in Rouen. 102 people paid the 10 franc entrance fee.

69 cars started the 50km selection event that would show which entrants would be allowed to start the main event, the 127 km race from Paris to Rouen. The entrants ranged from serious manufacturers like Peugeot, Panhard or De Dion to amateur owners, and only 25 were selected for the main race.

The race started from Porte Maillot and went through the Bois de Boulogne. Count Jules-Albert de Dion was first into Rouen after 6 hours and 48 minutes at an average speed of 19kmph. He finished 330 ahead of Georges Lematre (Peugeot), followed by Doriot (Peugeot) at 1630, Ren Panhard (Panhard) at 3330 and mile Levassor (Panhard) at 5530. The official winners were Peugeot and Panhard as cars were judged on their speed, handling and safety characteristics, and De Dion’s steam car needed a stoker which was forbidden.

Early races

In 1895, the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris Trial was held and this was the first real race as all competitors started together. The winner was mile Levassor in his Panhard-Levassor 1205 cc model. He completed the course (1,178 km or 732 miles) in 48 hours and 47 minutes, finishing nearly six hours before the runner-up.

The first regular auto racing venue was Nice, France, run in late March 1897 as a “Speed Week.” To fill out the schedule, most types of racing event were invented here, including the first hill climb (Nice – La Turbie) and a sprint that was, in spirit, the first drag race.

An international competition, between nations rather than individuals, began with the Gordon Bennett Cup in auto racing.

The first auto race in the United States took place in Chicago, Illinois. The course went from the South side of the city, North along the lakefront to Evanston, Illinois and back again on November 28, 1895 over a 54.36 mile(87.48 km) course, with Frank Duryea winning in 10 hours and 23 minutes, beating three petrol-fueled and two electric cars.

City to city racing

Fernand Gabriel driving a Mors in Paris-Madrid 1903

With auto construction and racing dominated by France, the French automobile club ACF staged a number of major international races, usually from or to Paris, connecting with another major city in Europe or France.

These very successful races ended in 1903 when Marcel Renault was involved in a fatal accident near Angouleme in the Paris-Madrid race. Nine fatalities caused the French government to stop the race in Bordeaux and ban open-road racing.[citation needed]

The first purpose built racing circuits

The Milwaukee Mile is the oldest motor racing track in the world, with racing being held there since 1903. It was not, however, purpose built for motor racing, starting life as a one-mile (1.6 km) horse racing track in the 19th century.

A remaining section of the Brooklands track today

Brooklands in Surrey, England was the first purpose built motor racing venue, opening in June 1907. It featured a 4.43 km concrete track with high-speed banked corners. Brooklands was also a centre of the aviation industry, with Vickers setting up a factory and aerodrome there during World War I. The racing circuit was closed in 1939 as war-time aircraft production took over. Damage done to the track during World War II meant the track never reopened for racing.

Brooklands seems to have been the inspiration for the Indianapolis Speedway, which opened in 1909.

1910-1950

The 1930s saw the transformation from high-priced road cars into pure racers, with Delage, Auto Union, Mercedes-Benz, Delahaye, and Bugatti constructing streamlined vehicles with engines producing up to 450 kW (612 hp), aided by multiple-stage supercharging. From 1928-1930 and again in 1934-1936, the maximum weight permitted was 750 kg, a rule diametrically opposed to current racing regulations. Extensive use of aluminium alloys was required to achieve light weight, and in the case of the Mercedes, the paint was removed to satisfy the weight limitation, producing the famous Silver Arrows.

Single-seater racing

Main article: Open wheel car

Modern Formula One car: McLaren MP4-24. Heikki Kovalainen testing at the Circuito de Jerez, 2009

In single-seater (open-wheel) the wheels are not covered, and the cars often have aerofoil wings front and rear to produce downforce and enhance adhesion to the track. In Europe and Asia, open wheeled racing is commonly referred to as “Formula”, with appropriate hierarchical suffixes. In North America, the “Formula” terminology is not followed (with the exception of F1). The sport is usually arranged to follow an “international” format (such as F1), a “regional” format (such as the Formula 3 Euro Series), or a “domestic”, or country-specific format (such as the German Formula 3 championship, or the British Formula Ford).

The best-known variety of single-seater racing, Formula One, involves an annual World Championship for drivers and constructors

In North America, the cars used in the National Championship (currently the IndyCar Series, and previously CART) have traditionally been similar though less sophisticated than F1 cars, with more restrictions on technology aimed at controlling costs.

Formula Three car racing at the Hockenheimring, 2008

Other international single-seater racing series are the A1 Grand Prix (unofficially often referred to as the “world cup of motorsport”), and the GP2 (formerly known as Formula 3000 and Formula Two). Regional series include Formula Nippon and Formula V6 Asia (specifically in Asia), Formula Renault 3.5 (also known as the World Series by Renault, succession series of World Series by Nissan), Formula Three, Formula Palmer Audi and Formula Atlantic. In 2009, the FIA Formula Two Championship brought about the revival of the F2 series. Domestic, or country-specific series include Formula Three, Formula Renault, Formula Ford with the leading introductory series being Formula BMW.

Single seater racing is not limited merely to professional teams and drivers. There is a large amateur ‘club racing’ scene catering for those who want to race single seaters against similar people all over the world. In the UK the major club series are the Monoposto Racing Club, BRSCC F3 (Formerly ClubF3, formerly ARP F3), Formula Vee and Club Formula Ford. Each series caters for a section of the ‘market’, with some primarily providing low cost racing whilst others aim for an authentic experience using the same regulations as the professional series (BRSCC F3).

There are other categories of single-seater racing, including kart racing, which employs a small, low-cost machine on small tracks. Many of the current top drivers began their careers in karts. Formula Ford once represented a popular first open-wheel category for up-and-coming drivers stepping up from karts and now the Formula BMW series is the preferred option as it has introduced an aero package and slicks, allowing the junior drivers to gain experience in a race car with dynamics closer F1. The Star Mazda Series is another entry level series.

Students at colleges and universities can also take part in single seater racing through the Formula SAE competition, which involves designing and building a single seater car in a multidisciplinary team, and racing it at the competition. This also develops other soft skills such as teamwork whilst promoting motorsport and engineering.

In 2006, producer Todd Baker was responsible for creating the world’s first all-female Formula racing team. The group was an assemblage of drivers from different racing disciplines, and formed for an MTV reality pilot which was shot at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

In December, 2005 the FIA gave approval to Superleague Formula racing which debuted in 2008 whereby the racing teams are owned and run by prominent sports clubs such as AC Milan and Liverpool F.C..

After 25 years away from the sport, former Formula 2 champion Jonathan Palmer reopened the F2 category again, most drivers have graduated from the Formula Palmer Audi series. The category is officially registered as the FIA Formla Two championship. Most rounds have two races and are support races to the FIA World Touring Car Championship.

Touring car racing

Main article: Touring car racing

World Touring Car Championship 2006: Andy Priaulx leads at Curitiba.

Touring car racing is a style of road racing that is run with production derived race cars. It often features full-contact racing due to the small speed differentials and large grids.

The major touring car championships conducted worldwide are the V8 Supercars (Australia), British Touring Car Championship, Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), and the World Touring Car Championship. The European Touring Cup is a one day event open to Super 2000 specification touring cars from Europe’s many national championships. Another World series is the FIA GT Championship, which features the Spa 24 Hours on their schedule. There is also the FIA GT3 that takes place in races across Europe as well as the less powerful GT4′s. Other GT championships include the British GT championship for GT3 and GT4 cars, Super GT and International GT open.

The Sports Car Club of America’s SPEED World Challenge Touring Car and GT championships are dominant in North America. America’s historic Trans-Am Series is undergoing a period of transition, but is still the longest-running road racing series in the U.S. The National Auto Sport Association also provides a venue for amateurs to compete in home-built factory derived vehicles on various local circuits.

Production car racing

Production car racing or known in the US as showroom stock, is an economical and rules restricted version of touring car racing, mainly to restrict costs.

Many series follow the Group N regulation with a few exceptions. There are several different series that are run all over the world, most notably, Japan’s Super Taikyu and IMSA’s Firehawk Series which ran between the 1980s to 1990s all over the United States.

One-make racing

See also: One-Design

One-make, or single marque, championships often employ production-based cars from a single manufacturer or even a single model from a manufacturer’s range. There are numerous notable one-make formulae from various countries and regions, some of which such as the Porsche Supercup and, previously, IROC have fostered many distinct national championships. Single marque series are often found at club level, to which the production-based cars, limited modifications, and close parity in performance are very well suited. Some of the better-known single-make series are the Radical European Masters, SEAT Cupra Championship, John Cooper Mini Challenge, and Clio Cup, and at a more modest budget, Ginettas, Caterhams, BMWs, and MX5s. There are also single-chassis single seater formulae, such as Formula Ford, Formula Renault, Formula BMW, and Formula Vee, usually as “feeder” series for “senior” race formula (in the fashion of farm teams).

Stock car racing

Practice for the Daytona 500.

Main article: Stock car racing

Stock car racing is the most popular form of racing in the United States.

Primarily raced on oval tracks, stock cars resemble production cars but are in fact purpose-built racing machines which are built to tight specifications.

The largest stock car racing governing body is NASCAR. NASCAR’s premier series is the Sprint Cup Series, its most famous races being the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400. NASCAR also runs several feeder series. The Nationwide Series, and Camping World Truck Series (a pickup truck racing series) conduct races across the entire continental United States. The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series conducts races across Canada and the NASCAR Corona Series conducts races across Mexico. NASCAR also governs several smaller regional series.

NASCAR also governs the Whelen Modified Tour. Modified cars are best described as hybrids of stock cars and open-wheel cars. They are heavily altered from stock, with powerful engines, large tires, tubular chassis and light bodies. The Whelen Modified tour is NASCAR’s oldest series.

There are also other stock car governing bodies, such as Automobile Racing Club of America and United Speed Alliance Racing.

In the UK, British Stock car racing is also referred to as “Short Circuit Racing”. This takes place on shale or tarmac tracks – usually around 1/4 mile in length. The governing bodies for the sport are the Oval Racing Council (ORC) and BriSCA. Both bodies are made up of individual stadium promoters. There are around 35 tracks in the UK and upwards of 7000 active drivers. The sport is split into three basic “divisions” – distinguished by the rules regarding car-contact during racing. The most famous championship is the BriSCA Formula One stock cars. Full contact formulas include Bangers, Bombers and Rookie Bangers – and racing features Demolitions Derbies, Figure of Eight racing and Oval Racing

Semi Contact Formulas include BriSCA F1, F2 and Superstox – where bumpers are used tactically.

Non-contact formulas include National Hot Rods, Stock Rods and Lightning Rods.

UK Stock car racing started in the 1950s and grew rapidly through the 60s and 70s.

Rallying

Main article: Rallying

A Ford Escort RS Cosworth, driven by Malcolm Wilson on a stage rally.

Rallying, or rally racing, involves two classes of car. The modified Group A, but road legal, production-based cars and the Group N Production cars compete on (closed) public roads or off-road areas run on a point-to-point format where participants and their co-drivers “rally” to a set of points, leaving in regular intervals from start points. A rally is typically conducted over a number of “special stages” of any terrain, which entrants are often allowed to scout beforehand at reduced speeds compiling detailed shorthand descriptions of the track or road as they go. These detailed descriptions are known as “pace notes.” During the actual rally, the co-driver reads the pace notes aloud (using an in-helmet intercom system) to the driver, enabling them to complete each stage as quickly as possible. Competition is based on lowest total elapsed time over the course of an event’s special stages, including penalties.

The top series is the World Rally Championship (WRC), but there also regional championships and many countries have their own national championships. Some famous rallies include the Monte Carlo Rally, Rally Argentina, Rally Finland and Rally GB. Another famous event (actually best described as a “rally raid”) is the Paris-Dakar Rally. There are also many smaller, club level, categories of rallies which are popular with amateurs, making up the “grass roots” of motor sports. Rallying is the most widely used sport around the world as it can race on any circuit type. As well as the WRC other major rally events include the British Rally Championship, Intercontinental Rally Challenge, African Rally Championship, Asia-Pacific Rally Championship and endurance rally events like the Dakar Rally.

Targa Racing (Targa Rally)

Main article: Rallying

A Toyota MR2 , driven by Adam Spence in the 2006 Targa Tasmania prologue stage.

Targa is a tarmac-based road rally which is run all around the world. This began with the Targa Florio. There are many races including Targa Tasmania held on the Australian island state of Tasmania run annually since 1992. The event takes its name from the Targa Florio, a former motoring event held on the island of Sicily. The competition concept is drawn directly from the best features of the Mille Miglia, the Coupe des Alpes and the Tour de Corse. Other events around the world include the Targa Newfoundland based in Canada, Targa West based in Western Australia, Targa New Zealand and other smaller events.

Drag racing

Main article: Drag racing

In drag racing, the objective is to complete a given straight-line distance, from a standing start, ahead of a vehicle in a parallel lane. This distance is traditionally mile (400 m), though 1/8 mile (200 m) has become popular since the 1990s. The vehicles may or may not be given the signal to start at the same time, depending on the class of racing. Vehicles range from the everyday car to the purpose-built dragster. Speeds and elapsed time differ from class to class. Average street cars cover the mile in from 10 to 15 seconds whereas a top fuel dragster takes 4.5 seconds or less, reaching speeds of up to 530 km/h (330 mph). Drag racing was organized as a sport by Wally Parks in the early 1950s through the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association). The NHRA was formed to discourage street racing.

Launching, a top fuel dragster will accelerate at 3.4 g (33 m/s), and when braking parachutes are deployed the deceleration is 4 g (39 m/s), more than the Space Shuttle experiences. A top fuel car can be heard over 8 miles (13 km) away and generates a reading of 1.5 to 2 on the Richter scale.

Drag racing is two cars head-to-head, the winner proceeding to the next round. Professional classes are all first to the finish line wins. Sportsman racing is handicapped (slower car getting a head start) using an index (a lowest e.t. allowed), and cars running under (quicker than) their index “break out” and lose. The slowest cars, bracket racers, are also handicapped, but rather than an index, they use a “dial-in”. Bracket racing has been viewed as the main cause of the loss of public interest in drag racing. People don’t understand why the slower car wins or why somebody needs to hit the brakes to avoid going too fast. Many local tracks have also complained that bracket racers will also go out of their way to spend as little as possible while at the track by bringing their own food, beverages, fuel and supplies thus, making it more difficult for tracks to make money on these events. This causes gate prices to rise and tracks losing interest in having such events.

Sports car racing

Main article: Sports car racing

The Audi R8 was one of the most successful sports prototypes ever made, seen here at Road Atlanta.

In sports car racing, production versions of sports cars and/or grand tourers, and sports prototype cars compete within their respective classes on closed circuits. The races are often conducted over long distances, at least 1,000 km (621 mi), and cars are driven by teams of two or three drivers (and sometimes more in the US), switching every few hours. Due to the performance difference between production-based sports cars and purpose-built sports prototypes, one race usually involves several racing classes. In the US the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) was organized in 1999, featuring GT1, GT2, and two prototype classes, LMP1 (Le Mans Prototype 1) and LMP2. Manufacturers such as Audi and Acura/Honda field or support entries in the Prototype class. Another series based on Le Mans began in 2004, the Le Mans Endurance Series, which included four 1,000 km (621 mi) races at tracks in Europe. A competing body, Grand-Am, which began in 2000, sanctions its own endurance series the Rolex Sports Car Series.

Famous sports car races include the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona, 24 Hours of Spa-Franchorchamps, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and the 1,000-mile (1,600 km) Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.

Off-road racing

Main article: Off-road racing

In off-road racing, various classes of specially modified vehicles, including cars, compete in races through off-road environments. In North America these races often take place in the desert, such as the famous Baja 1000. In Europe, “offroad” refers to events such as autocross or rallycross, while desert races and rally-raids such as the Paris-Dakar, Master Rallye or European “bajas” are called “cross-country rallies.”

Kart racing

Main article: Kart racing

A sprint kart race in Atwater California hosted by the International Karting Federation.

Although often seen as the entry point for serious racers into the sport, kart racing, or karting, can be an economical way for amateurs to try racing and is also a fully fledged international sport in its own right. A large proportion of professional racing drivers began in karts, often from a very young age, such as Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. Several former motorcycle champions have also taken up the sport, notably Wayne Rainey, who was paralysed in a racing accident and now races a hand-controlled kart. As one of the cheapest ways to go racing, karting is seeing its popularity grow worldwide.

Despite their diminutive size, karting’s most powerful class, superkart, can have a power-to-weight ratio of 440 hp/tonne.

Historical racing

Main article: Historic motorsport

Laguna Seca, Monterey, 2008

As modern motor racing is centered on modern technology with a lots of corporate sponsors and politics involved, historical racing tends to be the opposite. Because it is based on a particular era it is more hobbyist oriented, reducing corporate sponsorship and politics. Events are regulated to only allow cars of a certain era to participate. The only modern equipment used is related to safety and timing. A historical event can be of various different motorsport disciplines. Notably some of the most famous events of them all are the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival in Britain and Monterey Historic in the United States. Championships range from “grass root” Austin Seven racing to the FIA Thoroughbred Grand Prix Championship for classic Formula One chassis.

While there are several professional teams and drivers in historical racing, this branch of auto sport tends to be contested by wealthy car owners and is thus more amateur and laid back in its approach.
